The Finals is a fun and frantic shooter with unprecedented levels of destruction for a small-scale, team-based multiplayer game. There’s a lot more to it than shooting other people in the face and stealing their money, and there are a ton of things to learn if players want to climb the ranks and win more matches.

The Finals: How to Invite Friends
Having trouble getting the squad together in The Finals? Here are a few easy fixes to try out.
While The Finals is relatively friendly to beginners, there are a lot of useful mechanics that the game doesn’t tell players. Here’s a quick collection of tips to help new contestants gain the upper hand.
Know Your Role
Each character archetype excels at different things, and players will need to know what their chosen class is good at if they want to win more games:
- Light: Scouting, Disruption, and Skirmishing
- Medium: Healing, Intel Gathering, and Area Denial
- Heavy: Destruction, Suppression, and Fortification
It may be tempting to try and go for kills all the time, but if you want to win more ranked games, you’ll need to stick to what your class is designed to do. Heavies, for example, can completely negate all incoming damage with their bullet-blocking shields. Meanwhile, Lights can completely counter Heavy Shields by throwing Glitch Grenades at them. Mediums can keep their teammates alive with their Healing Beams, but they can also knock opponents out with their accurate, high-damage guns.
Must-Have Equipment
While this isn’t particularly set in stone, players should always carry with them one area denial tool (Pyro Grenades, Gas Mines, etc.) and some means to either destroy the environment (C4, Breaching Charge, RPG-7) or help with movement (Jump Pads, Ziplines, Grappling Hook).
Movement and destruction tools greatly increase the overall quality of life during general gameplay, and they all provide deep layers of strategic and tactical use, giving new players the chance to learn how to best play the game. You can get away without bringing any of this equipment, but this usually requires a lot of knowledge and game sense.
Deny The Enemy’s Movement
The best way to defend an objective is to make reaching it as hard as possible for the enemy. Players can do this by blocking pathways with Goo, laying down jump pads behind windows, or placing barricades on chokepoints.
Additionally, obstacles like ziplines and ladders can be destroyed by regular gunfire. Doing this is often enough to give teams a few precious seconds to secure the win.
Shoot The Buttons
Elevator and draw bridge buttons can be triggered from afar by shooting their buttons. This is good for slowing down an escaping enemy or to make your own getaway faster. Players can also get creative with this tactic by raising a bridge and placing a Jump Pad on the inclined surface so they can sail toward the opposite direction more quickly than usual.
This tip is especially useful for denying Heavy players the high ground in maps like Monaco, where there are plenty of elevators on the sides of buildings. It’ll also throw off players who don’t have any movement tools equipped.
Using Tanks and Barrels
Players can pick up and throw the many colored tanks, barrels, and canisters found all over the map to gain an advantage. On PC, this can be done by pressing F and left-clicking to launch. However, launching an explosive tank or flame barrel this way is a little tricky to use since they take a few seconds to detonate after making contact with a surface.
To get this long delay out of the way, shoot or melee the canister before picking it up. You can shoot the nozzle off of a gas or explosive tank to prime it for detonation, and you can just melee a flame barrel while it’s being held to set it on fire before throwing it. Careful use of this mechanic can net players a decent competitive advantage when it comes to attacking an objective.
Goo Is Your Best Friend
Goo is much more useful than players might think. It’s not just there for blocking corridors, it can also be used to create cover, make bridges, trap enemies, block objectives, and more. A Heavy with a Goo Gun can make platforms for players to stand on, giving them a clear shot at enemies from an unexpected angle or the ability to scale walls without relying on Jump Pads or ziplines.
Keep in mind that Goo can be easily destroyed by fire. If Goo is blocking your way, toss a Pyro Grenade at it, and it’ll burn away after a few seconds. This can be used offensively by baiting enemies into mantling over Goo and setting them on fire.
